Institutional Biosafety Committee

Scientific research involving biological and biomedical materials is critical to transforming our understanding of biological mechanisms and advancing research in clinical treatments. In doing this research, researchers and other biosafety professionals are required to mitigate safety risks involved in these activities.

The Montclair State University Institutional Biosafety Committee was established as a resource for information, guidelines, policies and procedures that will enable and encourage those working in the laboratory environment to work safely and reduce or eliminate the potential for exposure to biological hazards. The information presented here also reflects the requirements and guidelines of federal and state regulations. It is intended that the Principal Investigator and supervisory personnel will supplement this information with instruction and guidance regarding specific practices and procedures unique to the work being done by those in their laboratories.

Some examples of biohazardous materials are:

  • blood
  • select bacterial agents
  • live viruses
  • fungal pathogens
  • select genetically modified agents

Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) and the IBC

EHS and IBC have a shared goal of protecting our researchers from exposure to hazards in the laboratory. They work together to:
  • develop and implement biosafety policies and procedures
  • provide training and education on the safe handling of biohazardous materials
  • ensure compliance with federal and state regulations as they apply to biosafety in research
